About Me

Tom before becoming a Functional Aging Specialist

My coaching journey started with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, physical education, and a teaching certification. After three years of trying out in the professional football business, my life choices led me to other occupations. The next thirty-six years were spent working and drilling in the oil field business.

Then one day it all came to an end!

It was a long trip flying back home to Anchorage from a challenging drilling assignment. I was asleep and exhausted. At the time, I had been drilling oil wells in Oklahoma.

For many years, my job involved drilling, flying, driving, and staying in motels or remote rig camps. I smoked cigarettes, drank lots of diet soda, and had a dreadful diet. It was typical for me to be away from home for at least twenty days a month. It was a high-stress job!

My wife and I raised and supported three daughters, all earning college degrees. We were paying college tuition, medical bills, and IRS payments. I was constantly remodeling our old house. The stress of it all was overwhelming!

Pain on Arrival

As the plane touched down on arrival, I was surprised at the pain I felt throughout my whole body. HIGH-LEVEL PAIN! I was shocked because I did not have pain at the beginning of the flight!

I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis, and Polymyalgia Rheumatica. I was prescribed four different medications and had surgery on my left hand for Carpal tunnel syndrome.

I recall the day I was lying in bed, unable to move, not able to work, and worried sick about my family, health, and future. I vowed that day to retire and use my education to change my life and the lives of others.

August 17th, 2016, was my last day in the Oil Field Business

Tom, as a Functional Aging Specialist

Before the last day of my employment, I was certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Personal Trainer. At sixty-six, I finally started coaching and training clients, most of whom were my age and older! It was apparent that I needed to advance my education.

Today I’m a Functional Aging Specialist. Some say I’m a Trainer or an Exercise Therapist. I’m a Coach, and most of my clients are between 45 and 85. My specialties are balance, flexibility, strength, and pain management.

While coaching in Alaska, I became part of the Integrative Medicine Team at the Alaska Cancer Treatment Center, teaching cancer patients Qigong and Balance. I was honored to give a lecture to all the Physician Assistants in the State of Alaska regarding the art of Qigong and its benefits related to cancer.

My educational experience has been non-stop, with a six-month internship at the Pain Clinic as a Posture Alignment Therapist. In June 2022, I completed my advanced training with the Gray Institute, the leader in Functional Movement, with a Certification in Applied Functional Science.

Fall Prevention with Life Coaching

I offer a Balance Program created by Dr. Thomson, a professor at the University of San Francisco Kinesiology Department.

We start with an assessment of your current abilities. We outline your objectives and goals using the Mind Movie Technology. This enables you to be clear about what your goal looks like.

We let go of any negative thoughts and behaviors that may be holding you back! Then we adopt success habits, and create an action plan together.

My passion is to inspire you to have the quality of life you deserve, do what you want to do in life, and re-discover your abilities through movement and education.
