The Joy of Changing Lives

“Hi, my name is Eric, on Jan 28th, 2022, I was wheeled into the OR at the Portland VA Medical Center for a liver transplant. I was 115 pounds and very close to death. During the operation, I suffered ventricular tachycardia, (Early onset of Heart attack) that was followed by post-transplant delirium, (Hallucinations, disorientation related to an organ transplant) followed by Hemorrhagic stroke, (Ruptured blood vessel bleeding in the brain) and then three weeks in a coma. I was very close to death! Four months in the Hospital and two months in a rehab center learning how to walk again.

When I got out, I found Sports West Athletic Club in Reno, Nevada and they recommended Tom McGuire. In six months, he has helped me go from 128 pounds and having trouble climbing stairs to 155 pounds, and ready for a scuba vacation next week!

Tom was very good at knowing when to hold me back and when to let me push myself so I didn’t get hurt. Not an easy task for him since I'm a former Army Ranger and was very frustrated with my physical condition! I would highly recommend him to anyone. Great Guy!”

Lower blood pressure and weight loss

My blood pressure had gone up, so I decided that I needed to step up my exercise routine. So, I hired Tom McGuire as a personal trainer. I have worked out all my life. Tom kicked my butt and kept me in the ‘zone’ for an hour twice a week. My blood pressure has dropped and as a bonus, I lost 5 pounds. He varied the workouts and kept me moving each time. The workouts were very challenging while being lots of fun.

This week my sciatic nerve was causing me a lot of discomfort. Tom coached me through several low back & hip stretches. Each posture isolated specific muscles & tendons that targeted where the pain originated. I was a little sore afterward, but the pain was gone.

Senior Balance

My mother has been training with Tom for over three years now! Using Zoom two to three days a week, we see a consistent and enormous improvement in her ability to keep herself balanced. She is more robust and flexible and has fun following his directions. She's excited to get up in the morning as the workouts give her something to look forward to. It's genuinely been very beneficial.

Injuries, Mature Bodies and Movement 

Tom is just what the doctor ordered … so to speak. He designed a fitness program for my untoned, 60-something body and then coached me through it. I had back, knee and shoulder issues and I was worried about making them worse, but one of Tom’s specialties is handling “mature” clients who bring with them the injuries and susceptibilities of a life lived. I’m stronger now and better toned and have lost about 20 pounds. I am very happy with my progress and with Tom as my coach.

Training for Working Professionals

I am not a novice at exercise and weight training. Since my early teens, I have been involved in sports. However, when I started to train with Tom, I realized how little I knew about human kinetics. I am extremely impressed by his in-depth knowledge of exercise physiology and the functions and malfunctions of skeletal muscles. Tom literally studies his clients' fitness levels and muscle capacities. He then modifies the exercise program accordingly. This is very important because it prevents self-inflicted injuries from happening. Whenever I train with Tom, I feel elated and, more importantly, gain muscle strength without feeling tired. After a strenuous workout with him, I go to my practice and complete a challenging workday with my patients without feeling worn out. It is a privilege to be able to train with Tom.

Helmut and I would like to thank you for the care, understanding, and expertise you gave us while you were our Personal Trainer for 3 months at the Alaska Club. You were very patient with Helmut's condition. You understand the challenges of aging and pain!  We were very fortunate to have you.  Also, the Qi Gong, Tai Chi and Team Training classes that you held were very helpful, particularly for Helmut's balance.
