Train live & online, or in person! Let’s get started >
When I started as a trainer, I never would have guessed that developing an advanced Functional Health and Fitness Program would be my passion.
I intended to train anyone that wanted to work out and have fun. I was always working out and loved going to the gym. After I retired from the Oil Field, I decided to use my original degree in Psychology and Coaching to help people get in shape.
So, I was the ‘older’ trainer at the Athletic Club. To my surprise, I had a full schedule of clients over sixty within six months of starting this journey!
I couldn’t just be a trainer, I had to research numerous problems that involved functional health and fitness that always came up with just about every client, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Knee pain, Shoulder pain, Lower Back problems, Stress, and Pain. So, like a good trainer, I worked on all the credentials I thought would provide the best service for functional health and fitness. With the knowledge, I would know more and be able to help more.
As I aged (haha), I would get the call whenever an older person came into the club with complicated issues. As I continued researching with the Functional Aging Institute, it became clear that most of my clients over seventy had problems with their balance.
I never thought I would become obsessed with Balance problems, but I changed when my father fell in the bathtub at eighty-five. How horrible was it for him to lay in the cold bathwater until someone finally got enough help to get him to safety? It took hours. If he had been in a Functional Health and Fitness program while alive, he might not have slipped in the tub that day.
I started training Allen at the age of 89. He was frail, had no flexibility, no strength, and was experiencing severe balance problems. He would fall every month! Finally, he got out of his chair at a senior function, lost his balance, fell, and broke his hip!
He was in the VA Hospital for six months before he went home. I never thought I would train him again, but his wife called and wanted me to come to the house. While training Allen, I used a special floor mat and stepping pads; therefore, I had him remove his shoes and socks.
At that point, I noticed that as Allen walked, his toes were not contacting the floor! I was shocked and upset that no one ever mentioned this to his wife!
Walk with your toes off the floor!
See how long it takes to lose your balance!
Quotes and Statistics from The Functional Aging Institute and the CDC:
Functional Aging Institute: “In 2018, there were eight million fall-related injuries that required treatment in ERs, Urgent Cares, or Physician offices. Falling now accounts for 25% of all hospitalizations in the USA. With 1 out of 4 people over age 65 falling each year and 1 out of 3 over age 75, we are poised to see a massive increase in these numbers in the next ten years. By 2030, we will have over 50 million falls with over 12 million injuries! The need for greater inventions is critical now more than ever.”
(CDC) Center for Disease Control: “Falls among adults aged 65 and older are very costly. $50 billion is spent on medical costs related to nonfatal fall injuries, and $754 million is spent on fatal falls.”
Why do we lose our balance? What keeps the body balanced? What can you do to correct your balance? The fact is that everyone is different; no ‘one’ program fits everyone. However, to be of service for Balance problems, with the best Functional Health and Fitness Program the parts include Posture, Flexibility, Strength, and Pain management.
