Low-impact Strength Training

I’m a Functional Aging Specialist at Sports West Athletic Club in Reno, Nevada. I’ve been training the ‘Active Aging' population for over seven years. Most of my clients are between the ages of 55 and 75, and I’m seventy-two years old and very active. I coach at the Club and Online for an average of one hundred and twenty sessions per month. I see many problems!

Commonly, there is an 'overweight' problem; most of us have experienced this, so don’t think you are alone. The more complicated issue is a weight problem combined with aging or injured knees and hips.

You are advised to exercise but find it challenging to move around because of a joint problem. How often have you heard, “Just go for a walk, get on the treadmill”? Blaha, Blaha, Blaha…

Hey! That hurts my knees and back!

If it seems like everybody wants the newest device or trendy workout, here’s a reminder to try a classic exercise device that delivers on all fronts: The rowing machine.

• Unlike the treadmill, while keeping your body weight off your knees and hips, get a low-impact, full-body workout with extra emphasis on the quads, biceps, back, shoulders, and core.

• They’re easy to find and use, providing cardio and strength training for anyone, especially people over 50 with joint problems. You get muscle work, bone-health benefits, and a good sweat while raising your heart rate.

• You can adjust most rowers to fit your fitness level and desired intensity. Listen to your favorite music podcast or go harder with your motivating soundtrack.

• The full-body effort amps up the number of calories burned, making this a great way to lower your body fat percentage (while building lean muscle).

• And you can row for a brief warmup or as the centerpiece of your workout.

I’ll combine this with a comprehensive joint mobility routine that will enable you to go on that hike with the kids, ski, take that trip you’ve always wanted, and feel better about yourself!

Coach used to say: “If you don’t change, there ain’t no change!”
